I was able to solve this issue on karmic beta via other means... I found a K50alsa-utils symlink to /etc/init.d/alsa-utils in /etc/rc0.d/ and /etc/rc6.d/ . Once I redirected those symlinks to an empty file, my sound settings are correctly restored throughout the boot and login process. Not sure h

The only way I was able to boot was effectively changing the init line, but this was only because my syntax was wrong and the system would only boot without initrd loading. I've reinstalled and it's resolved, but I have no idea what was wrong with my grub entries or initrd. -- grub.cfg generated
