Could you try that with a karmic Live-CD. For me karmic solved a lot of problems and I think it is a good idea to do a fresh install (if possible). Compared to a X61 refernece system the X60 fails to support the hardware audio keys (they are decoupled form the software mixer sitting in the tray).
