In addition, I have just confirmed that front-jack headphones still
work, so it seems like the problem is isolated to the rear-green line.

This regressed in the last two weeks or so. I have been using the
Pangolin beta (and alphas) without incident with regard to sound, but
after having come back from vacation and updating to the final release I
have lost all sound.
I updated my machine relatively frequently

I had modified the alsabase conf file while futzing around trying to fix
this. The change (to add one more modprobe line) has had no effect
either way.
