I have this problem as well when using the workspace switcher, usually when scrolling through with the mouse wheel. It has happened first when I checked the Workspaces on a Cube button in Desktop effects. It has persisted even though I have disabled this option. What happens is like you say above

Through this method I could not upgrade Xubuntu from 6.10 to 7.04. Everything looked fine, and it says no longer says there is a new version available. However, everything that I can see is exactly the same, with no mentions of the new versions in sources.list, or at the splash, help files, etc.
