The sound stops after a while (but never during playback. If, for
instance, I start to see a video the sound always works until the video
ends). It stops for no apparent reason, I can't see a pattern to

I don't believe it makes any difference. The 64-bit package skype in the
partner repository already depends on skype-bin:i386. This means that we
are already using the i386 version of Skype and its libraries.
Also, the user says it works for him on 32-bit versions of Ubun
Neither deleting ~/.Skype nor using the upstream package helps with the
problem.
