I sympathise with Walter and Hamish (being an Ubuntu novice).
Fortunately my brother in law isn't and was able to talk me through the
process.
What I did (with his help) was:
1. Downloaded the patch. You can use the GUI to extract it. I left
the extracted folder sitting in the download

As a novice to all this I can't interpret the error messages.
I feel I've already used up too much of my brother-in-law's time on this, so
wouldn't feel able to ask him to start debugging someone else's install.
Perhaps one of the power-users on this forum may be able to assist.
