What OCR engine did you used for this? Did you add -l option to the settings (in case of German it should be -l deu for Tesseract and -l grm for CuneiForm)? I think this was your problem. I've just made extensive changes to the OCR help page, read more about language handling there:

I don't think so - I've tried to stop GDM, unload radeon driver and then load it again, but it didn't change the aperture behavior. Moreover, when I choose the aperture value in BIOS according to what X detected, everything was right without mangling with radeon/gart kernel drivers loading order.
