problem corrected if you change the font smoothing or hinting settings
in System->Preference->Appearance , Fonts tab, Details button? Also,
are you sure that the same font is rendered properly in programs other
than Firefox?

Alexander, I agree, double buffering would be an ideal solution for
usplash in general. It would avoid problems of this nature in the
future. Until double buffering is the default, though, this will fix
the current theme.

using the gaim command. I set gaim to automatically run in my session
preferences (a relic of ubuntu 7.04). Prior to pidgin 2.2.0 using the
