I have the same behaviour with a Dell XPS M1530, NVidia 8600M GT, driver
NVIDIA 270.41.06 and an external Acer X203h.

I have a Dell XPS M1530 with Intel 3945ABG (daily updated Karmic) and I use a
Linksys WRT54GC as AP with WPA Personal + TKIP. For me is impossible to connect
using networ-manager plasmoid.

The same here, on a MacBook Pro, anyone known if the Andrea's fix is
still working? Just for installing Kubuntu from a daily-live and change
the driver..
