I was using the synaptic package manager as root to purge files listed
in the sidebar menu as Not installed (residual config). The script (?)
returned an error code of 1, and automagically called the launchpad
'report a problem' routine.

i've been looking for a way to just copy the clock.kss file from the kde
subdirectory into the gnome screensaver subdirectory but getting nowhere. i
corresponded with the author of the screensaver a year or so ago, but i no

Ubuntu doesn't do things like this on its own. You obviously installed
the xfce4 or (more probably) xubuntu-desktop. Can you please confirm
this?
