with the standard alsa-base.conf file and we are back to sound through
speakers only. Please feel free to recommend any module options that may
also enable the speakers on this laptop.

I can confirm the output of the command on Lucid is Not supported.
What is the release used in your last deployment where gdm-safe-restart
was supported?
