ephemeral boot, so, I went into settings, 16.04 was selected, but the
kernel was 'no minimum kernel'. I changed

On my laptop, everytime I suspend and resume from the suspend, the
wayland/gnome-shell has crashed, and I have to login again fresh.
I can reproduce 100% of the time on this hardware.

FYI -- using apt-btrfs-snapshot reverts, I have nailed this down to an
update from:
gnome-shell 3.26.0 to 3.26.1
If I revert the package, the crash on suspend stops.

This fix is complicated in that the networking involved with passing
rooturl= and ip= gets into hairy bits in the distro and the handover
from initramfs to the rootfs, not just cloud-init. It still needs to be
discussed. We'll make sure we put an update on here once we have a more
