I had the same problem (logged in bug #737252). It happens even if I
don't check the boxes for "download and install updates" and "download
and install 3rd party software". Is there a simpler work around instead
of installing another OS first?

I'm installing ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition from a USB key on my Asus
eee pc 900. I erased all of the existing partitions so unfortunately
I'm stuck now.
