After having these problems initially in 9.10, I downgraded to 9.04.
I have tried these freezetest kernels, in 9.04, for a few weeks now and
have not had a single crash. Please let me know if there's anything else
I can do to help troubleshoot this issue.

Earlier in the day, Ubuntu released updates which included some modified X
packages. This freeze happened after those new packages were already installed
and the machine had been rebooted.
After the freeze I modified my xorg.conf to disable
Another freeze today. The mouse cursor started lagging and then about an
hour X froze. After the freeze I modified my xorg.conf to disable power
management with Option "PM" "Off".

X froze again today - but in a different way. The picture on the screen
became corrupted. The image basically black with some some random white
static. I could kind of see the outline of my mouse as I moved it
around, but nothing else was visible. I wasn't able to catch the debug
info this time bec

One other thing I forgot to mention: I can usually tell when a freeze is
about to happen because the mouse cursor starts moving very slowly, kind
of lagging behind where I am moving it. It usually freezes within an
hour of noticing this.

Strange. Could you please post the talkd entry from /etc/passwd, the tty
entry from /etc/group, and the file permissions of the tty you are
logged into while trying to talk (pointed to by 'tty' command). Also
please try running 'mesg y' on each end? Thanks!

I installed Jaunty 32 server on a computer to test it it out and
corrected an error in one of the scripts which may have been preventing
it from working properly. I also noticed that inetd didn't start right
away after installing, so I had to start it manually with 'sudo
/etc/init.d/inetutils-inet

This new patch creates a user called "talkd" with the proper group
access. It also updates inetd.conf to the correct format. Any additional

It doesn't necessarily have to run as nobody - the critical part is that
talkd has to have access to the TTY devices in order to work. Do you
think a new user should be created for talkd, then have that new user
added to the TTY group?

I am experiencing the same problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with the
Intel 915 card. I'm running Jaunty 9.04. Every time I open the lid I see
the flickering/bouncing for 5-10 seconds before it starts working.

Talkd does not seem to use the proper settings in inetd.conf. I believe
it should use 'udp4' rather than 'udp'. Changing this and adding the
'nobody' to the tty group seems to fix the permissions issues. This is
for talkd 0.17-13 on Ubuntu 9.04 (I also experience the same issues

I've duplicated the bug in 8.10. The only way I could get talk/ytalk to
work is by making these changes - modifying inetd.conf to use udp4 and
adding user nobody to group tty.
