I did a clean install of Intrepid, updated all, rebooted, upgraded to
Jaunty (keeping old kernel image, or else my system wouldn't work at
all), updated all

I have a similar, if not the same, problem.
Also running an Asus motherboard - P5VD2-MX - the Jaunty Beta Live CD
and Alternate install cd don't recognise my hard-drive at all so could
not install. When running the Live CD, it mounts my external backup
drive, but not my hard-drive. Hard-drive does
I had to adapt Saurus's workaround slightly:
Instead of using this in the console:
sudo dpkg -P acroread-debian-files acroread acroread-escript acroread-
dictionary-de acroread-l10n-de
I had to use this:
sudo dpkg -P acroread-debian-files acroread acroread-fonts acroread-
dictionary-en acroread
I had the same issue. This post corrected the problem for me:
