In the last few days there was an update which included a new ConsoleKit
(0.4.1-3ubuntu2). Since then the fault has not occurred. I am cautiously
optimistic that this may - albeit by accident rather than design - have
fixed the problem for now.
Presumably if the underlying fault is still there,

Ubuntu 10.04. About 1 in 10 times when booting machine, there is no
sound and the machine cannot be rebooted or shut down, except by a
forced power off (hold down power switch). These 2 faults always occur
together.
The sound problem is caused by Ubuntu not finding the sound
Just installed new Firefox version 3.6.10 - problem solved!

Thanks Drew212, using a new profile does indeed fix the fault. Going
back to the original profile, I can disable ALL extensions and it will
still not work. Is it possible that version 3.6.8 is not compatible with
existing profiles saved under earlier versions? This kind of thing does
happen on
