I have a similar but a little unique issue.
I tried a USB lice CD of the Ubuntu 9.10 beta. As soon as I chose the
options, it takes for a while and the desktop appears. However the
desktop would be a total freeze !. Neither keyboard nor mouse works.

I too have similar king of problem. I did a USB boot stick and tried the

I figured out myself what was causing cups to fail. It happened to be a
figure (embedded in pdf) in eps format that was originally generated
using inkscape-0.46
However its very strange that this image in inkscape was actually
generated by importing few .png images and finally exporting to eps. On

I just had the same problem with my fresh installation of Ubuntu-9.04. I
accidentally noticed that my eth0 was changed to eth1. This made all my
single user license dependable softwares not to work.
However now I have managed to rectify it. I removed the physical network
connection and then reboot
