for the logfilethis helped me (just remove ppa doesnt work)
"grep Broken /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log"
Then remove broken packages. On my system it was
"sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-all"

Using Exposé is a little workaround.
In Exposé-View you can drag an drop app-windows. Its very fast, you dont
need to press any button, just assign one edge to exposé.

Disabling the FDD in bios fixed it for me. But why? Ubuntu 9.10 didnt
have this problem.

solved:
The cracking noise was because of soundcard-standby. In /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf I changed the line to #options snd-hda-intel
power_save=10 power_save_controller=N. I disabled soundcard-standby.
