wieman01 solution worked. I installed hardy AMD64, dualboot with winXP. I don't know how the wrong UUID got there. When I removed quiet from /boot/grub/menu.lst kernel line I was able to see something like: usplash[1257] segfault blah, blah, blah error 6 -- [hardy] splash screen disappears
