You where correct Caroline, I tested this out on Windows XP and my
laptop also had sound problems, the problem only occured while I was
using Ubuntu and I just assumed it was something to do with ALSA rather
than my laptop, but once XP was installed it did the same.

It seems once I unplug my headphones from laptop the sound refuses to
output via the laptop's inbuilt speakers, I have to manually leave the
headphone jack half way into the slot to enable sound through the
laptops speakers.
