If any confirmation of this bug is needed, I'm having the same problem.
Resolution resets to maximum with each login. Selecting and saving a
lower resolution with the box checked to make it the default has no
effect. My maximum is 1280 X 1024. Selecting 1024 X 768 works for
the current session
I can confirm that system sounds are broken in Ubuntu 8.04. I can play
a music CD and the Sound Playback in System->Preferences->Sounds
produces a tone, but I cannot play the login logout nor the information
and warning messages.
