Sorry for the delay.
The bug also appears when running off a live CD, so there is no
"proprietary contamination" here.

I had been using fglrx before, but because it's broken with regards to
suspend/resume, I switched back to the open source driver.
So apparently I do have some fglrx bits floating around, but I'm not
sure how to safely remove them without also removing my madwifi wireless
driver. I did a "complete

[Gutsy RC] Dual monitor not working with Thinkpad T42 (ATI Mobility Radeon 7500)

Public bug reported:
I had dual monitor support working the way I like it (separate desktops
on each monitor) just fine in Feisty with the open source ati drivers.
I upgraded to Gutsy and it did not work. X.org did not like my xorg.conf
file and it kept sticking me into low-resolution mode. After
Xinerama really works? I tried using my Xinerama-like setup (mostly just
like Xinerama except that I have separate desktops on both displays) and
X kept coming up in low-res mode. I had to switch to the Feisty ATI
drivers to get my preferred setup to work.

[gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/res
Only problem with blacklisting fglrx is that dual head support breaks.
Sure, you get the image on both monitors, but the second monitor's mouse
pointer is only a giant square (it appears to be XORing with what's
behind it) roughly 1"x1" on a 19", 1280x1024 screen.
