I can confirm that this is an error only with the Ubuntu 15.04 package.
Removing the Ubuntu package and installing the binary from the above
link works for importing EPUB files.

A temporary solution here is to uninstall the Ubuntu package and use the
binary provided by the developer: this allowed me to import the EPUBs

My error output is the same as others with the ubuntu package on Ubuntu
GNOME 15.04.
