Issue is that the display routinely gets corrupted and flickers with blocks of
previously open windows.

As if by magic it did it again today.
I killed off chrome and virtualbox with no response. Killed off the screensaver
with again no change. Compiz and X just sat at 100% cpu and zero response to
the mouse/keyboard on the screen.

While there is a bodge to get things working (although I still get some

I see this as two issues, firstly the update-manager doesn't check for
enough disk space (in my case asked for 1770, I cleared 1.8G and it
still fell over), secondly when it then runs out of space the message is
unreadable and its a total guess as to which box does what on the
dialog.

the buttons in applications would not work but by resizing the
window(thus putting the buttons in another area of the screen) they were

I've learned a little more about this. Hopefully some of this will be
useful to people who want to work around the issue, or to Ubuntu package
managers who have the power to fix it.
The problem is that, when multiple versions of the JVM are installed,
the timezone directory (jre/lib/zi) is shared
I've just updated to 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and the bug is still there,
one slight change/improvement is that where originally I stated:
"Once anything has been typed then the mouse is unable to 'pick up' the
'active' screen (prior to anything being typed it works)".

I had upgraded from Xubuntu 9.10 and I didn't remove gnome-screensaver.
Some of the packages reported in the issue has Xfce4 counterparts (with
different settings). For example xfce4-power-manager is not the same as
gnome-power-manager
