The problem is not restricted to nVidia. As per the following reports in

…it is universal, effecting both Intel and AMD graphics too.
I worked around the bug using matthijskooijman's workaround in post 4
The problem is not solved, but I have worked around it by connecting
through the HDMI port instead of DP.

In my case, in addition to John's GTK warning, the following error is
logged in dmesg with every Totem launch:
radeon_dp_aux_transfer_native: 32 callbacks suppressed
And as per Janne's case, also a fresh install, but playback stutters and
skips, whereas VLC is fine.

4. When the pop-up for unlocking the default keyring comes up, do not simply
type in the password to unlock. Instead, click details and select the
