I appreciate that the Standard says 8 chars but when other
implementations have increased the length presumably for security
reasons it makes Vinagre unusable and I have to again boot into windows
so I can use realVNC to be able to log into these servers.

While trying to connect to a VNC server, the password field on the
Authentication is required screen cannot accept more than 8 characters.
A Windows Real VNC client can
