Seeing same problem on Ubuntu 11.04 on a few identically configured machines (lab of 200; problem affected 3!). Appears to be some corruption in /var/lib/apt-xapian-index. Cause unknown, but a simple workaround that works for me (on all 3 broken PCs) is: rm -rf /var/lib/apt-xapian-index
