With most recent updates, 3D acceleration once more blown away for nvidia-glx-177, (which no longer shows up as a Restricted Driver). Once gdm attempts to start, I again get a pop-up telling me that there was a problem with my video settings and that my computer is in low-resolution graphics mode.
