I'm an Ubuntu n00b (10.04, fresh install), so I was irritated and worried about this bug :). At first I thought there was something wrong with my graphics card (or, worse, that I had somehow damaged the installation). Like the others have said, this is not a show-stopper, just annoying... the only way I think this could be a slight problem is if there are any kind of important error messages at startup/shutdown that the user would not become aware of since the screen is unreadable then.
