So, maybe this is summing up the obvious but:
There seems to be two different bugs that produce the same symptoms.
The patched kernel above fixes the bug for SiS chipsets and should
somehow be moved into the main Ubuntu tree. There is a separate bug for
VIA chipsets that may be related to the acp
