Solved with "i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop" in
/boot/grub/menu.lst

I to have this, or a very similar problem as the original poster. Dell
Vostro 1310. On boot, usually to 1st or 2nd boot, no internal keyboard
or mouse, then, after a few reboots, it works. Does not start working
if I leave it booted.
It works in Grub PRIOR to boot. It worked with original flav
