I have found what application is causing the problem.
On Jaunty I have installed global-menu application and after the upgrade to
Karmic global-menu has remained on my system.
When global-menu is disabled gparted starts with no fail.
I did not find out more but I suspect it has something to do

I am not sure. The crash has happened meanwhile I was selection the icon
theme in xfce4. I think QT was the theme I have choosen.
I have ha several reports hopefully I remember right.
