I am reporting this bug from a different box.
I have tried to boot Ubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04 alpha 1 and daily
build (2011-12-17) on a Dell Mini 10. In both cases I got past the
'Ubuntu 12.04 with four dots' screen and then the machine froze with a
traceback.

This morning I was upgrading my hardy server and I was down to the
linux-server packages. They failed to install since selinux prevents
the execution of depmod. These are the relevant audit entries from the

Hi Colin,
I have no problem with closing this bug against the kernel package as
'Won't Fix'. But this tweak should be documented somewhere, in a
troubleshooting section of the documentation, otherwise we'll have some
other people hitting it and not knowing what to do.

When I observed the bug I googled for answers, and one of them was to
increase the value in /proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes to 16384 or 65536. I
chose the latter and now two and a half days later, under the same

It might be that one needs to restart the box. I have removed the

So, it is clear that the upgrade path is foobared. So, the only fix is

This appears to be a duplicate of #63628. I have added there the
