Adding this comment as a Note to Self, for future reference. I just had
to reinstall Ubuntu 18.04 on the same server. This time, after setting
the (Linux) system time using the `date` command, I then ran:
```
$ sudo hwclock --systohc
```
so that my local change would 'back-propagate' to the H/W c
I just encountered this same problem while trying to install Ubuntu
18.04 on a server I inherited from another team. Unfortunately, its BIOS
is password-protected and nobody knows the password, so... I had to find
a different workaround. It turns out that—instead of changing the BIOS
to store time

This is still a problem 3.5 years later - switching to Multi-Week view (no
matter if default, adapted, or reverted week-settings) appears empty. On the
Mozilla-Calendar side of bug hunting I've found at least two that seem to refer
to the same scenario, albeit with slightly changed details:

Have same issue on Ubuntu 12.04. The "append domain-search" has no
effect at all. But "prepend domain-search" does what is supposed to be
done by "append", which appends the extra search domains after what we
got from DNS server.

Same problem here (After Upgrade and switch to KDE from Gnome). I also
believe it is a "timing" problem in the upstart mechanisms - but I do
not know how to debug this properly.

Just found a work around for 8.10. The Xorg "vesa" driver in 8.10 is not
working either for my SM710 card, but the kernel VESA frame buffer
driver works, by appending vga=0x317 to kernel boot arguments. This will
give me a 1024x768 virtual console.
Then in Xorg.conf, specify "fbdev" as the driver,

Interesting findings.
To confirm the performance issue is caused by gnome-settings-daemon, I
just run following test:
1. Ctrl + Alt + F1, login
2. X :1 -query localhost
Then a similar window appears like open a VNC session. In this X
session, the performance is good.
So I guess it's a Xvnc <->
I have the same problem here. And I've been using Xvnc with xinet.d in
this way under Feitsy and Gutsy, the speed is acceptable. But with Hardy
b4, just try to vnc to localhost:1 will like viewing the desktop
remotely through WAN. So I believe there should be something wrong here.
