I am running desktop not server
I am running Network Manager
IP and DNS come from DHCP
I'll try the workaround and let you know.
I'll also fiddle with Network Manager and see if I can sort out what is going

This is a workstation, not a virtual
dnsmasq and systemd are installed from the ubuntu repos (I'm on 17.04)
I've done a full uninstall of dnsmasq (apt-get remove --auto-remove
--purge dnsmasq, manually deleting /etc/dnsamsq.d, apt list --installed
*dnsmasq* to confirm everything was removed and t
affects 17.04 - worked fine on 16.10 and 16.04

the frequency but did not eliminate the problem entirely

Part way through a java build, the display manager crashes and restarts.
This seems to happen when console applications which generate a lot of
output run.

crashes the display manager regardless of whether I log
It looks like I didn't upgrade from 13.04 beta to the final release
properly. Since I have done the clean install I have been able to
reboot w/out hanging and power off actually powers off. In addition,
while I have seen a few of the kernel messages about the hard disk, they
do not repeat and the
sorry for the double comment - forgot to turn off "tap to click". In
any case, what I thought was a hardware problem was just a boot loader
problem After some convolutions, I have my system up again.

I have only had 13.04 on this machine. I have a clean install of
13.04/amd64/desktop from the release media, instead of the beta media.
I've re-installed most of my packages and am waiting to see if the
problem occurs again. Assuming the problem comes back, I will test the
upstream kernel next.
I have a toshiba hard drive. My system has experienced a hardware
failure, and is going out for repair. Once I have it back I will
retest, as well as check the upstream kernel.

I applied a bios patch from HP (fixed error in what bios reported as cpu
frequency).
I also saw some comments where people upgraded to a newer version of the
kernel, so I did a pull/build/install of the latest gutsy kernel source,
but this did not fix the problem.
