I must be missing something. I am seeing the symptoms of this bug (high
CPU usage by gwibber-service after it has been running a while, but the
version of gwibber-service installed is later than the version mentioned
above as including the fix.

Unfortunately, I am having difficulty getting pulseaudio out of the
equation- I edited /etc/pulse/client.conf to show 'no' instead of 'yes',
but it still seems to reappear on resume, and when I kill it, too!
Please could you give a prop in the right direction?

OK, disregard the above comment.
I managed to disable pulse, and suspend/resume.
On resume, the Alsamixer terminal reported that the sound device had
been unplugged (see screenshot), but on reselecting the device (F6), it
appeared to be unmuted. Music played, but only through internal
speakers-

OK, so having a search for compiz resume bugs yielded the following
solution:
CCSM General Options Display Settings:
Disable sync to v-blank.
I don't know if this is a workaround or it's fixed. Haven't seen any
other users with this issue. Maybe it's just me!

64 setup still gives the failure as described.
With the -S option, no error is generated, but syndaemon does not appear

I followed your instructions, and perfectly understand what you are
saying, and was surprise when it did not work.
There aren't many more details to give- just to note that every time I

OK, what now works for me is:
Using Alkis' fdi, and adding:
acpi_backlight=vendor
to the boot parameters in menu.lst. I guess that using that fdi
overwrites any changes I made by downloading the patch from Martin, but
there you go! Now it's perfect.

with the current 180.xx drivers are quite widespread. Until there is a
