The patch / fix ppa:kamalmostafa/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight worked for me!
I have a Gateway NV5913u notebook with Ubuntu 10.10 amd64. The Fn keys
and the power management slider both work, finally I can see without
wearing sunglasses.  I had to apply the acpi_backlight=vendor line to
disable the old acpi_video0 line.  I hope this helps other people, I see
that there are a lot of users on the ubuntu forums that could benefit
from this info.  Thank you very much!
