Poking around a bit I have found that, for some reason, the root volume
is not available. Hence, running lvm and using lvchange -a y /dev/mapper
/bromine-root at the prompt makes the device node appear (and hence I
can mount it).

Since this problem occurred (I don't know when as it's another user who
uses gnome and reported the issue to me) I've ran multiple full updates
and the problem persisted.
