Was having this problem using gstreamer as audio backend in kde 4.3.1.
Switched to xine backend (phonon-xine package on my archlinux install)
and all is good.

use Lilo, that should work. You will need the alternative installer CD. From
memory, you choose back or go back when asked to install grub bootloader
and then choose install lilo from a menu.
If you get a extremely slow loading Lilo, then edit lilo.conf:
sudo nano /etc/lilo.conf
and

Anyone got this fixed yet?
After several hal updates, the drive is still not detected. Foresight 2.0 and
Slackware 12.1 both detect the drive before and after install.

your last solution worked for me. Running Kubuntu 8.04 with 7600GS. Installed
the beta drivers right from the word go on a clean install, X would fail. The
crucial part for me was to blacklist the nv driver.
Without blacklisting nv, I would get this:

I have a pioneer sata dvd burner with my pc, running off an asus m2n-sli
motherboard and everything is working fine with 7.10 and so far 8.04 beta1.
Appears to be working at least for some sata optical drives.

gave pinepain suggestions a try and set dma settings manually in bios. I
have increased speed from 3 mb/s to 20-25mb/s. still not optimal but an
improvement.

Clean install of Gutsy final. copy a 350mb avi file at times is slow but can
also start transferring at 120+mbs, then within seconds it drops to around
50mbs which by this time it has finished copying. I have noted it going as slow
as 14mbs from 122mbs.

not sure why (new to linux) but my normalize was installed to
/usr/local/bin directory in feisty.
I had to use
ln -s /usr/local/bin/normalize /usr/bin/normalize-audio
to get it working.
Just thought i'd add this for other newbies who might find they have a
similar configuration
