I have the same problem with a first generation Macbook. Disabling KMS
makes brightness work again.
Changing the brightness with ACPI doesn't work, the /sys/class/backlight
directory is empty.

Definitely is a bug relevant for when the sidebar is "docked" to the
left or right. Annoying too because widgets that update frequently such

That's exactly what I did. I put /usr/bin/metacity but this disabled the
desktop effects on logon. If I re-enable them, /usr/bin/compiz is put in
the gconf key.
I forgot to mention I'm on gutsy, maybe the difference between the
behaviours lies there?
