In the preferences dialog, Advanced tab, set the "Backspace key generates" to
"ASCII DEL".

create the dirs before running dpkg-divert.

My guess is that you've stored a session at some point, and that it restarts
every time.
You can try to clear the cache to see if it still happens (remove or backup
~/.cache).
