Aha ... fixed it. Updated my motherboard BIOS. Now its rock solid on
on ubuntu 8.10. Can't test 9.04 just now.
The board is an ASUS M3A78-EM. Old (bad) bios was 1206. New (good)
bios = 1602 That update skips a few intermediate levels, so I have no
idea which one actually fixed it.

FYI I'm seeing exactly the same effect.
A fresh install of either 8.10 or 9.04 (AMD64 desktop). Then install
flgrx using ubuntu restricted drivers manager and I get this problem.

As an experiment I tried to use the vmware driver and got a similar no
devices found error. I've never actually tried the vmware driver
before, so this may just be a coincidence (has it ever worked ?).
