I think it's a bit strange you consider this bug 'wishlist'. In server
environment, where remote reboot is a must, it's quiet a showstopper.

gdm starts.
Starting by hand (startx/startxfce) works nicely. Compositing is working
perfectly. Seems to be gdm specific.

You cannot use preseed *file* to change keyboard layout since these questions
appear *before* CDROM even accessed.
You can use kernel parameters tought. Try:
append console-setup/ask_detect=false console-setup/layoutcode=us
..
in isolinux/isolinux.cfg file.
