in hide_mode set to never, maximized window are covered
I have not set anything to anything but the launcher is fixed on the
left hand side making unity 2d unusable.

This is something we would love to do. The problem is a stable data
source of machines. We will up-level the certified hardware as we have a
reliable, updated and comprehensive hardware list. Will be in new rev
(unless de-scoped :-) for the next revision of the site.
