The following steps solved the problem apparently:
1. move all plugins from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins in to temp directory
2. sudo apt-get upgrade.
3. move plugins back.

Well, while I consider Ubuntu as a great operating system, it is clear
it has not met the requirements of many people in this particular
aspect. Nor it seems will ever do (too much time waiting already). While
