Marking this bug as not a duplicate of bug #492782 . Attempting any
work-around suggested in that bug causes the system to freeze up and
then shut down. I believe the root cause here is something deeper than
the video layer. The last bit of the kernel log today was:

To get debug information while booting, remove the 'splash' and 'quiet'
options from the boot command. If booting with the liveCD, press F6

This is related to the zoom feature in Firefox. Select
View,Zoom,Reset from the menu, or press Ctrl+0. Does this make the

dpkg --debug -i output attached. The problem appears to be in the
REMOVAL script for the previous version of onboard (0.87).
Also, here is a work-around:
dpkg -r onboard
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/onboard_0.91_all.deb
Not sure why, but removing it as a separate step makes the problem go
chmod 000 /usr/bin/pycentral may also work as a work-around. This may
depend on the versions of the old packages that are being removed.
When finished, a reinstall of python-central should complete the
deferred byte-compiles.

I had the same issue with a gutsy (7.10) to hardy (8.04) upgrade. I used the
modify /etc/apt/sources.list; apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade method.
