Yes - I have a test version of Precise (3.2.2) running and everything
works properly there. But not on my Oneiric system which has 3.2.1.

I (wife of this launchpad account holder) got this problem, but I've
been having lots of problems for a couple of weeks, with all
applications crashing regularly. Anyway, in case it helps, this is the
log file:
Processing triggers for man-db ...
dpkg: error processing man-db (--unpack):
I suspect this design is much more intuitive when there are multiple
separate users. Each would have a button and the person logging in
makes a choice. But a different approach is needed when there is only
one user (a pretty common scenario). I'm not sure what the best
solution is but I agree
I can confirm that Gnome64's solution worked for me. The details were:
Step 1 - cd /etc/grub.d
Step 2 - sudo gedit 30_otheros
Step 3 - search and replace $root with ${root}
Step 4 - Save 30_otheros
Step 5 - sudo update-grub2
Step 6 - sudo reboot
My test system has Windows XP, Jaunty, Karmic
If you make a faulty choice, and cannot login using GNOME, it may be possible
to edit ~/.config/monitors.xml to recover. Change the resolution settings e.g.
width1280/width
height1024/height

How complete is the X failure?
It depends. Sometimes my interactions with setting screen resolutions doesn't
hang the system. But when it does:
- I can move the mouse
- the keyboard LED displays when I hit caps lock
- Ctrl Alt F1 resulted in no screen displays at all and now wouldn't respond to
