added it - had to do it in 2 stages - but I got an OK at the end.

I downloaded the Ubuntu Beta of 8.10 over Thursday evening - ubuntu-8.10
-beta-desktop-i386.iso,
Did a fresh install of that and all the updates and then decided to get the
nvidia working
(I dual-boot with XP and once nvidia is installed the screen position remains
the same in both boots).

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6 with all updates as of thursday 10 am.
when playing rhythmbox using files in my home partition on a permanent
hard drive I get freezes - usually within minutes, sometime it might
take 3 or 4 minutes, sometimes it might take 30 minutes. I have attached
a strace.

it would seem that my ability to send e-mail has vanished again, either
originated by me or by replying to a received mail. I am wondering if
setting secure permissions on the user folder to only allow me access,
and barring others in or outside my group access, would have any effect
?

hi, as above - a fresh install with all updates - received mail and
tried to reply - evolution froze, went grey and closed. At least this
time apport picked up the crash :)
Receiving, Sending and Forwarding mail seems to work, but Reply is a
problem

there was un update - I assume, which allows me to at least send e-mails
that I originate - but if I merely try to forward the e-mail, evolution
crashes, literally at the moment I hit the forward button.

I wiped the installation and did a fresh install, updated everything and
thus far it would seem to be OK - I managed to send one mail to myself
!! (grin). It would seem to have been fixed in one of the updates from
today.
