Possibly the simplest breakage example: firefox now can't be used as the
preferred browser for xdg-open.

Thanks, that was it. Apologies for this turning out to be a 'support'
question, not a bug. I was so sure.
I'm not used to symlinks breaking things in unix, so I didn't even
suspect my moving of /var was a problem. My / is an SSD so I don't want
logs writing to it. /data is a HDD.
Thanks again
Adding #include does not fix it.

There is a hack-ish workaround, yet it reminds me of the good ol' days of Linux
when you could actually control things from simple text files:

Affects me. Ubuntu 14.04. dig -x 192.168.1.101 takes a long time to
not come up with an answer. And that's because it's defined in

lsof -i and tcpdump are two programs that can do do reverse-DNS lookups,
and ignoring /etc/hosts means they take way longer than they normally
would.

it's broken.
Partial workaround is to use Vim's built-in FTP support. vim

Ok, now that's an answer I can work with.
Thank you.
I'll see what I can find out this evening.
I don't have the requisite knowledge to build a complete package, but I
will do what I can.

What about dapper backports?
I vaguely remember hearing something about dapper having an extra long
support cycle...
Ok, found it.

Fully agreed. This is extremely annoying on my laptop. An option to
diable, or even turn the sensitivity way down would be welcomed.

We use unison to sync several servers running dapper, fedora and windows, and
this is causing me a large problem with replacing a dead windows server. The
only windows binaries available at this time are much newer, and not compatible
with the versions in the repo.
Fedora updated their packages
I am currently struggling with the same issue.
As of Jan 29, 2007 this is still a problem in 6.06, and 6.10
