Yes, the problem is now solved. From previous experience with other
distros, I believe the ugrade to nvidia-glx 9755 did the trick.

I don't have the newest driver, but the problem was resolved by editing
xorg.conf to set "Monitor" "Option" to "UseEDID" "0".
